Platinum Sponsor PanelThe global landscape for sustainable energy has shifted in the past year, with some major economies, in particular the United States, cancelling or restructuring previous policies to encourage investments into lower carbon energy sources. Other economies and major companies have refocused their investments into a less rapid transition to new clean sources of energy. At the same time, overall global investments into low carbon energy have continued to grow, with the International Energy Agency (IEA)estimating that total clean energy investment worldwide (renewables, electric vehicles, nuclear power, grids, storage, low-emissions fuels, efficiency improvements and heat pumps) was expected to exceed $2 trillion in 2024, far surpassing the $1 trillion going to coal, gas and oil.
The Caribbean Sustainable Energy Conference will explore the implications of these global trends for the Caribbean region and how the region should adapt and recalibrate policies and programmes in the evolving global investment climate.

Regional electricity integration to drive Caribbean power to X economyPower to X refers to technologies that convert renewable electricity into other forms of energy or valuable products, such as hydrogen and other chemicals or used as inputs to create petrochemicals like methanol and ammonia. Within the region, there are opportunities to develop solar, wind and geothermal resources to drive green downstream industries. This session will explore these opportunities and look for ways to encourage regional integration.

Global energy investment shifts: Opportunities and Risks for small island states
The global move towards renewable energy presents unique opportunities for islands to improve their energy independence, reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports, and leverage their natural resources.
The session explores the risks, such as the financial and technical capacity required for the energy transition, the vulnerability to climate change impacts on new energy infrastructure, and the potential for geopolitical shifts to affect investment flows and technology transfer to these nations.
Ultimately, the conversation aims to identify pathways for small island states to navigate these global shifts effectively and build resilient and sustainable energy futures.

Development of a low carbon maritime sectorThe maritime sector, a critical enabler of global trade, faces increasing pressure to mitigate its significant greenhouse gas emissions. This session explores the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of a low-carbon maritime sector.
It will examine the technological advancements in alternative fuels, such as hydrogen, ammonia, and biofuels, and the retrofitting of existing vessels.
The session will also delve into the policy frameworks and international regulations, including those set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), that are driving this transition. It will consider the economic implications, infrastructural requirements, and collaborative efforts needed to foster a sustainable and environmentally responsible maritime industry.

Does wind power have a future in the Caribbean?
Wind power has the potential to be a significant contributor to the future energy mix of the Caribbean. The region's reliance on expensive imported fossil fuels requires a transition towards sustainable energy sources. This session will explore and develop wind resources across region.
In T&T a wind resource assessment has begun. The results will drive the development of future wind projects and likely be a key input into the development of green products in years to come. This session explores how other country’s view the development of wind power.

Industry Tour: Piarco Solar Park
At the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Conference, we give delegates the opportunity to engage with energy assets that they would not normally be able to visit. In previous years, we’ve taken delegates to power plants to learn about how electricity is produced, to ammonia and methanol facilities where delegates learned about reducing emissions. In 2025 delegates will get the opportunity to visit and learn about solar energy at the Piarco Solar Park.
The park began construction in 2022 and was commissioned in 2024.
The 0.5 MW solar park has a minimum annual generation capacity of 767,034 kWh and the potential to avoid approximately 500 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The power produced contributes to the Authority’s current annual electrical consumption at the Piarco International Airport, with capacity for future expansion.
